Meetings Update: Two more meetings are scheduled for 2011.

Location:  Belian Art Center 5980 Rochester Rd, Troy MI 48085
               (SE corner of Rochester Rd & Square Lake Rd)
                     I/ACT parking is behind the building

Please RSVP to Linda Shears (linda@lindashears.com) if you can attend so we can have a head count for setting up the room.

There is no charge. Meetings are open to anyone interested in promoting arts and culture in Troy. Artists are encouraged to bring work samples for display and discussion. Our website is TroyArts.org.     
Call for Artists #1 - Re-purpose a Chair for Charity!

Councilwoman Mary Kerwin notified us  that the Michigan Municipal League has issued an art challenge!  This year's fall convention will be held in Grand Rapids. The theme is public art.  Interested municipalities have selected old courtroom style chairs to be decorated by each community's artists.

The re-purposed chairs will be auctioned and the funds will be used to promote art for children. 

Deadline: Completion by Oct 1st, event begins Oct 4th.

Call for Artists #2 - Chalk Artists of All Ages Needed!
 
The retail and restaurant associations of Royal Oak are coordinating a fun new art event where the whole family can participate:

Chalk & Chocolate Art Tour - Location: Downtown Royal Oak
Friday Oct 14th - Sunday Oct 16th 
Opening Night Celebration - Oct 14th 

 

Chalk art will adorn the streets and chocolate sculptures and special menu items will be featured at participating retailers and restaurants.

Three categories of artists are eligible to participate:
1) Adult/Family "Fun" Artists (4 team member maximum)
2) Youth/Student/Emerging Artists (parental permission for under 18)
3) Professional Artists (please submit jpeg or pdf work samples)

Application deadline is Sept 29, 2011

 

There is a $20 charge for Category #1 and $15 charge for Category #2, however proceeds benefit the Royal Oak Neighborhood School Arts Curriculum and Common Ground.

 

A jury of artists and gallery owners (including I/ACT member Anne Kuffler of Ariana Gallery) will judge the chalk art and award prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in all categories.

Brian Bach - Michigan CFO Associates
 
Brian Bach is a self employed CFO, I/ACT member and supporter of the arts. He has recently joined forces with Michigan CFO Associates which provides accounting and financial expertise to small businesses on a part-time basis. This is a great solution for companies that can't afford to have a full time professional CFO on staff.  Congratulations on your new endeavor!

Troy Artist: Donna BeaubienTroy artist  Donna Beaubien was featured in a front page article in the Aug 29th edition of the Troy Somerset Gazette. She will have Booth #5 at Arts Beats & Eats which takes place on Labor Day weekend.

Donna is a self supporting artist and  ALSO runs Fine Art at the Village which brings in artists from all over the country and takes place in Rochester Hills!

Artist and model Margarita Beale has artwork on display at the River Gallery in Chelsea and the Perrysburg Ohio municipal building. The Sunday Dinner Company in Detroit is also showing eight of her works.  

Artist and Photographer Janna Bissett had framed cruise photos and sheet metal necklaces on sale at the Dream Cruise.

South Oakland Arts Association - News
  
SOAA has a new website and  an amazing new newsletter format.

This 50 year old organization meets in Royal Oak and provides another opportunity for local artists to network and learn. 

The Monday, Sept 12th meeting  will consist of  8 to 10 woodcarvers who will demonstrate a variety of carving techniques. Meetings start at 7pm and take place at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located at 814 N Campbell Rd in Royal Oak. Parking is on the N side of the building and the meeting location is downstairs.

Multi-talented artist and VP Mike Byrne coordinates a lot of their endeavors which recently included painting the four foot fiberglass apple at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. This was part of a statewide art project coordinated by the Michigan Apple Commission. (More artsy apples here.)
